Virus signature database update failed: "Error creating temporary file name" (Windows XP)

This content references an operating system (OS) that Microsoft no longer supports or will soon stop supporting. Although ESET is committed to providing support for our products on any system, we do not advocate using an OS that no longer receives security patches. This issue and solution only applies to computers running Microsoft Windows XP. Creating a "Temp" folder will allow your ESET product to update virus signature database files.

I. Verify folder view options

  1. Click Start My Computer.
  1. Click Tools from the top menu bar and then click Folder Options.

  1. Click the View tab and select the Show hidden files and folders option.

II. Create a new Temp folder

  1. Click Start  My Computer.
     
  2. Double-click Local Disk (C:) and then double-click the WINDOWS folder.
     
  3. Verify that the folder named Temp exists.
     
    1. If the Temp folder is missing, create a new folder by right-clicking in the window and selecting New → Folder. Name the folder Temp.
      Update your ESET product by clicking Update from the main menu on the left and then click Update now.

    2. If the Temp folder is present, continue to section III below.
       

III. Delete the contents of the Temp folder

  1. Left-click once on any file inside the Temp folder and press Ctrl + A on your keyboard.
  2. Right-click the selected files and click Delete. When prompted, click Yes to confirm the action.
  3. Update your ESET product by clicking Update from the main menu of the left and then click Update now.
